Hello, my name is Derek Platt, and I am an associate financial consultant with Fitzgerald Wealth Management. Prior to starting my career, I earned my Finance and Economics degrees from Trinity University in San Antonio. Upon graduation, I came back to Houston and began my financial services career in 2015. I found my passion for helping others in their own endeavors and within a year's time I was recognized for my hard work and was asked to participate in various leadership programs. Through participation in these programs my long-term vision culminated, and it became evident that as a young financial professional I needed to deepen my knowledge of the industry and align myself with more experienced financial professionals. I recognized the importance of having great mentors and that to truly assist clients in a holistic manner I would need to align with and operate under a full-service practice.
Just as this vision was beginning to cultivate, I met Michael Fitzgerald and was introduced to Fitzgerald Wealth Management in 2017. A firm with experienced professionals, who were willing to mentor me and had the business model and culture which I was seeking. I quickly realized this was a team I wanted to be a part of and grow with; therefore, when Mike mentioned he was growing his team I took the opportunity to move my career path forward. I was officially asked to join the firm in 2018 and since joining I have been encouraged to seek the CFP certification, which I am currently working toward this designation whilst working full-time.
Beyond the scope of work, I am a firm believer in maintaining a work life balance. I enjoy reading and being social on the weekends, as well as staying active through running, tennis, pick-up basketball, flag football and squash. One of my greatest mentors is my grandfather, John Platt, who at 88 years young was the oldest participant in the Chevron Houston Marathon in 2019. He is currently coaching me to run alongside him for the same race in 2020. My grandfather has been a great running coach as well as a great mentor and he has passed along his vast experience regarding business, family and God through his 89 years. He has stressed to me that ultimately it is about having a plan, understanding your trigger points, and knowing when to preserve and when to make a change. He said, “it is about recognizing your channels for influence and having a vision for how to use them to shape the world around you.” He said, “most of all it is about authenticity, discerning which voices to listen to for guidance, and remembering to make your life’s work spiritual.” I am looking forward to continuing to help clients achieve their goals using my grandfather’s wisdom and the leadership within Fitzgerald Wealth Management.
